Mel Gray from Montgomery.
National Football League wide receiver for the St. Louis Cardinals from 1971 to 1982. After attending Montgomery High School in Santa Rosa, California[1][2], the football standout accepted a scholarship to the University of Missouri. He was a sixth-round draft choice for the St. Louis Cardinals in the 1971 NFL draft and was selected to four straight Pro Bowls (1974-1977). Gray caught passes in 121 consecutive games between 1973 and 1982. [3]

And I agree with Brad Muster. He didn't look fast but he ha d a long stride and covered a lot of ground. I only saw him play in All Star game against my brother and the other Sonoma County All Stars, but he was very impressive.

Seth Smith from Sonoma about 6 years back was amazing to watch. Went to BYU Hawaii on a rugby scholarship.

I don't know about the best, but Rancho has had some very good ones. Mark Hedeen 95-96, was an animal, went on to Washington State but his college career was ended by injury. Karl Mikolon 98-99 played at SRJC and Bemidji State , Jim Knight 77-78, Maurice White (SRJC, West Texas A&M, Arena Football), 00 -01, Johnny Callinan 04-05 and Damon Smith and Chris Stevens 93-94 all had great careers as High School running backs.

96-98 NBL Rancho Cotate High School. Jamaal Wright and Mark Hadeen both were unstoppable in the veer offense. Both went for over 1000yds in 1998 on less than 100 carries. This was the hay day of high school football. Montgomery had tosh burress and oj Marchbanks. All these guys were amazing.

Nice to see an old post brought to the forefront.
Seems like Rancho backs have overall been dominate, mostly because of the offense they ran. I’d also add Peleti-Gore, Cody Allen and Cordell Webb to that list of great Rancho backs despite being QB’s. Also the back from 08-10 (can’t Remember his name) who ran for nearly 2000 yards each year. Incidentally, no one mentioned Eddie Lua from Rancho in the late 80’s. His stats were a bit diluted since they ran the Delaware Wing-T and split carries.
That back from Analy from a couple years ago has to be added to the list James (not sure of his first name).
Small school you’d have to add David Pike and Austin Benson both from Middletown.
As the sport is evolving, it’ll be interesting to see if Running Backs are as relevant since most the HS’s are now running the spread and throwing it more.

Agreed good to see some life on here.
Eddie Lua was a very good. Good call. Hell that was back when Rancho and Jim Hunt won the NBL with like 17-18 players in ‘87 or ‘88.
For early mid 80’s Brett Magnuson was a absolute beast one of the best ever.
