Middletown is playing Salesian, Upper Lake and Brookside Christian this year. Upper Lake's JV team was 9-1 in 09 and 10-0 in 2010 so they will be good this year. As for Middletown going for a state title berth, if they win their section, they have a small enrollment and would be dropped into the division IV pool since there are so few actual division IV section champions. That is why they would've gone last year had they beaten Salesian.

Middletown was listed at 484 students last year, so they were already in the small school bowl pool. They are listed at 512 students for 2011. It is my understanding the only way they would be dropped into the small school bowl pool is if there was less than three section champions with under 500 students in all of Northern California. The chances of that happening in the north are non-existent considering the Northern section has two divisions (D-IV and D-VI) where a school under 500 students is guaranteed to end up winning. Then you add North Coast (D-V) and Sac-Joaquin (D-VI) and you have four right there.

Just a thought, but if Salesian wants to make a state title run why don't they get out of the Bay Football league? They have to play CSD, St. Eliz and Emery every year. Would it not make more sense to play in the Bay Shore league if they are worried about strength of schedule? It could help out both programs if they swap Salesian with Swett. Looks like they are heading that way! North Coast Section Board of Managers votes unanimously for 'super league' realignment By Ben Enos Contra Costa Times Posted: 04/18/2011 07:35:01 PM PDT Updated: 04/18/2011 09:50:40 PM PDT An idea that seemed far-fetched in January turned to reality Monday, as the North Coast Section Board of Managers voted unanimously to approve a proposal to realign the Bay Shore Conference into three "super leagues" for the 2012-16 alignment cycle. Beginning in the 2012-13 school year, one new league will be made up of Alameda, Arroyo, Berkeley, Bishop O'Dowd, Castro Valley, Encinal, Hayward, Mt. Eden, Piedmont, San Leandro, San Lorenzo and Tennyson. Another will have Albany, De Anza, El Cerrito, Hercules, John Swett, Kennedy-Richmond, Pinole Valley, Richmond, St. Joseph Notre Dame, St. Mary's, St. Patrick-St. Vincent and Salesian.

northcoast you are correct. I was under the assumption that Middletown had a little over 500 students last year.

I wish Middletown could represent the North in the Division IV state bowl game. The North needs some strong teams to match up with these private school powers the South puts in these games.

Middletown's first three games are @ Salesian, which you have posted. Then Upper Lake at home the 16th and Brookside Christian at home the 23rd. I'll get the rest later on.

Not sure why 12 teams (although St. Joes doesn't play football) but stil too many teams. I assume they'll split the teams up into 2 divisions. I'd think they would have movement between the divisions depending on how competitive the teams are and one division would be stronger than the other.
There is actually talk in some SS leagues of the same type of set up and having a league championship game between the 2 winners of each division of the league (like the SEC / Big 12 etc set up)

I guess I was mistaken. Middletown scheduling Upper Lake really doesnt look like they are making an attempt to re-vamp anything. I also don't think Brookside Christian is a big leap up. Sure they made State last year, but I think that was more to lack of quality teams. But atleast they are getting teams from out of the area.
I personally think Middletown could do much better. Even if they may be down from last year they always seem to dominate.

dynomite- Upper Lake isn't traditionally a power school, actually usually pretty sad. But their JV team is 19-1 the last two years with their only loss being at Middletown in 2009. They dominated Middletown last year. The Upper Lake coach knows that group is the best shot he'll ever have at beating Middletown. Who would you suggest Middletown schedule? Who wants to travel to Middletown?

They should try and schedule Healdsburg. That was a great game last year and both schools have good programs and are about an hour away.

I am aware of Upper Lake's JV talent. But anybody in the know knows it wont translate to the Varsity level. I believe Foltmer knows that also.
Gametime hit the nail on the head. With the recent division changes, the Mustangs can schedule solid teams. Healdsburg, El Molino, Valley Christian(Dublin), Ferndale, Justin-Sienna.
As of right now 2 of their 3 preseason opponents are of smaller enrollments. (Brookside is at 111 students)

Not that it really matters, but two years ago Upper Lakes JV went 8-2 with losses to Middletown and undefeated St. Helena. I am also very interested to see how the talent from the JVs translates to the Varsity level.
