Whats going on at Montgomery? I can't remember ever seeing them at 0-5. And with Casa, Windsor, and Newman still to play, its possible we could be looking at an 0-10 Montgomery. Never thought I would have lived to see the day.
Is it just a down turn in athletes with the talent we are used to seeing from Monty? Lots of enrollment has dropped around the empire; even Rancho is Div. III this year.
Anyone know whats going on?

Ben, a good topic, does anyone have insight? Teams have always been vulnerable to ups and downs, but it seems the extremes are happening faster, any reason for that? Monty (and Sonoma and Healdsburg) are prime examples.

Hard to say for sure with Monty. Was part of it was Franci hanging on a bit to long. Not sure if a long term plan was in place especially since Haskins had to take over temporarily for a year. Still athletes there and should be more competitive, but this year they are really horrible, no way around that.

The bottom line with Sonoma (1313 enrollment) and Monty (1653 enrollment) is coaching. Neither school has an offensive system in place that will be successful.
Both schools have enough good athletes to compete but this year they both have a low number of kids out for football and it's hard to convince kids to make a year long commitment to a program that goes 0-10/1-9.
These football programs are in trouble and if both programs get run into the ground any further it will take quite a few years to bring them back.

IMO they first need to bring in offensive systems and coordinators that can put up some points. I think it's obvious that the current OC's can't get it done.

I've got to look at the most common denominator. Haskins came in as head coach and pulled a 3-8 Monty team to 10-2 just a year later. Monty hires Bautista and they go 5-7, and so far 0-5 this season. Its a reality that Montgomery, the same program we all know, could finish 0-10. That's not a drop in talent/athletes at the school, that coaching running the program into the ground.
Haskins came out of no where and had wonderful success; it's in Montgomery' blood. Bautista comes in and after two ears we could see 5-17...
That's my take.

My thoughts are I agree with Ben. Haskins came in with no real football coaching back ground but, a good baseball coach knowing how to coach kids and was successful. Monty has plenty of talent and it appears the kids are speaking by not coming out and transferring that they chose not to play then to play for the current staff. 0-5 start with Windsor, Newman, SR, Ukiah and Casa left realistically looking at 0-10 or 2-8 at best.

These things go in cycles, but especially at the HS level coaching is huge. Having seen Monty, I was really surprised at how bad they were and their offense was horrendous.
0-10 would be brutal. The worse part is this is really a bad/down year for the RE. Not even really sure who is the best team, MC, RC and CN are the top tier, but none are a dominant team. The NBL is not that good this year (that's what makes Monty's struggles look even worse). SR, Casa, Ukiah, Carillo not very good, Windsor is not bad, not great.
MCAL is down as well. Thought San Marin, Tam would be solid and thought Novato might see some resurgence, but it's not there. Justin is pretty good, but not great. MC won't be challenged.
HDN, both big and little are not great, Fortuna has been solid. Eureka? Usually good for a great to good team every 3/4 years, seems to be a drought. No islanders moving in there anymore?
Ferndale, the dynasty over? Thought St. Bernard's would be the new power, but that hasn't fully happened.
I think the NCL has been the most entertaining and balanced league. Fort Bragg, SH and Middletown all capable of winning it (I'll go with Middletown) plus Willits has been solid. Pretty competitive league this year.

bella, good point that former MCAL and HDNL strong teams also not producing. What do you mean at Eureka no "islanders" moving in....did Eureka have an influx of Samoan families or something? Would love to hear from people up in HDN way, what's happening with Arcata's weak program, McKinleyville was once up there, and Eureka used to have a team competitive enough for playoffs every so often. Is it a matter a more liberal area with fewer families wanting boys playing football and fewer logger type families?

Bautista would have to step down for the good of the program. Monty needs to energize the fan base and get kids out to practice. IMO a younger coach who brings experience on the offensive side is what's needed.
There are coaches out there who could come in and right the ship or at the least, would get numbers back up throughout the programs.
A couple local guys who might fit are DJ Sexton (Newman) and Alexander (srjc). Both those guys have been with numerous programs and could bring offensive systems with them along with assistant coaches.
I have no knowledge of those guys looking to move but I think that's the type of coach needed to bring back programs like Sonoma and Monty.
