Early in season, but what is surprising?
MC? Played great competition, but offense hasn’t been great!
Monty and SR playing with a pulse. The “Big game might actually be kind of big this year.
State of Sonoma High football? Mick O’Meara days look so far away. Same can be said for Ferndale a true RE blue blood.
Newman defense overshadowing the offense!

I think MC will be good by about week 5. A lot more turnover on the roster than usual. A few more weeks for their young guys and they will be good to go.
Russell Ponce doing a great job with Santa Rosa. His teams always play physical.
Another surprise to me is how well St. Vincent de Paul is playing early with such a young team. Herzog doing a great job with those kids.

Even they look like they improved this year under their new head coach Mark Lubamersky. Despite turning the ball over 7 times, they still put up 30 points, which is nearly more than what they put up all last year. Defense played hard to the end, and almost helped lead a big comeback after being down 41-18 early in the 4th.

I’m not sure if this is a “surprise” but the biggest story has to be lack of participation. Hburg dropping their varsity program for the year. Newman not fielding a Frosh team. Looking at rosters on MaxPreps and sizes seem smaller than recent years. The disparity in competition will continue to widen. Safe to say that football is changing.

Not sure Newman defense is overshadowing offense. 450 and 440 yards vs CIF state champs and Northern Section champs respectively. Officiating kept Sutter game artificially close.

Add how far Novato has dropped?
Sad for a once very proud program. Hell mid to late 00’s it they easily were the top team in the RE w/ Newman. They were a SBG caliber team.......and now, just terrible!
Helicopter parents got Brackett out of there. And they got this result. To bad really.

They gave up 60 to a not very talented LL team?

to think Novato would be one of the worst programs in all of Northern California and Hburg wouldn't even have a team just 10 years ago I would have told you to GTFO

I'm not surprised a single bit that St. Vincent is 4-0. Trent Herzog knows how to build a team and get it done. They don't have the toughest schedule but coming from where they have been, getting in ten games in today's football climate, especially at a small school, it a feat of its own. They could very well earn 9 wins in the regular season.
I'm certainly surprised in Marin Catholic being 1-2 (probably 1-3 with Antioch this week). With Rancho Cotate beating Campolindo, that 1-2 record is even more surprising. I guess we know why they petitioned up to Div. II.
Analy has had a hard fall from grace. Watch them get replaced by Montgomery in the NBL leagues in the coming seasons. It sure is nice to see Santa Rosa with some life at 3-1, no doubt they will finish over .500 in the regular season. That win over Petaluma could help come playoff time especially if the Trojans win the Vine Valley.
Montgomery was due for a bounce back, no surprise there.
The Vine Valley as a whole is a surprise. So much talk about the SJS teams making the transition and how good they are going to be.... American Canyon (0-4), Napa (0-4), and Vintage (2-2). It leaves the door wide open for Petaluma though.
And how about Eureka? Shake up in Div. III I think.

Yes, unfortunate for Analy to cycle down just as they have to play in the tougher NBL I.
I still wonder how well Petaluma will do against the three public Napa teams. Despite the latter's records, their non league losses are at a high level.
Sonoma Valley did beat El Camino of South City, but I predict a petition to the NBL II (football only) to avoid life as a permanent cellar dweller. How ugly will it get once the Napa schools rebound?
Had hopes that Elsie could have turned a corner, and still may in the weak NBL II, but they had to cancel some of the non-league games.
And Novato--yikes. Entire MCAL in the skids, that is the most surprising to me, really only Marin Catholic and sort of San Marin.

not that surprising MC is having a tough start, I mean Campo is a toss up everytime they play, Mack is way more speed than this MC team no shame losing to Mack, Antioch is one of the best teams in the Bay Area straight up with way more speed and size all around........MC could have played an easier schedule (no SI this year)and come out 4-1 3-2 in out of conference and we would be having a different conversation........definitely lacking on offense but also a very tough 5 games to start your season, they will be 7-3 and likely make the semis and probably get knocked out there ( I don't think anyone thought they be as good as last couple of years)

Is NBL realignment going to happen every 2 years? And is it top 2 from NBL II move up and bottom NBL I 2 move down? Also I think St. Vincents will be in the NBL II next year I believe, they are in no mans land right now. I like the set up now, the NBL I will be tight with Ranch and Newman and NBL II with Rosa and Monty.
I think the Vine Valley will be realigned after this cycle, it seems likes it is a random hodgepodge of teams from D1-D4, with no regard to enrollment or competitiveness in football. AC, Napa, and Vintage may have poor records but they have played a much tougher schedule than Petaluma or the other Sonoma County teams for that matter, and they are used to playing better competition overall in the SJS. Lets be real, top to bottom the SJS has surpassed the NCS. SJS D4 teams would be competitive with NCS D1, minus DLS and the open teams.

I’m not sure why they didn’t just put AC, Napa and Vintage with Rancho, Newman and one other (I think they should’ve put MC there, although travel would’ve been a pain). That league would’ve been competitive year in and year out.

Couple surprises today- Casa beating Justin Sienna but that pales in comparison to Sonoma beating Napa...
