Re the weekend's blowouts, for Healdsburg, if they can't find a competitive game, the lesson is to just schedule a bye, rather than risk an 88-3 shellacking like from Livermore. Livermore is no powerhouse, but they play at a substantially higher level. Same for Balboa visiting Newman--Balboa, just take a bye, get healthier, and don't schedule a mismatch even if that is only what is available.
On paper Piner at Sonoma Valley was no mismatch. For years they have been competitive enough against each other at the mid table of the old SCL. Piner seems to have finally a perfect storm of a strong team and, good for them, are their highest level in years.
The Press Democrat news article quoted the Sonoma coach as suggesting that Piner did not substitute liberally until very late. If true, it is best to forget the old rule of thumb that in a blowout, to play your starters the first series in the second half, and then cautiously mix your starters with your second string. When the game is 57-0 at half, the winning coach has a great opportunity to give ENORMOUS amounts of playing time to the second string. I am talking early second quarter onward. Winning 49-20 and giving your second string lots of playing time (and building your future) is far preferable than 71-0 mostly with starters.
The article also quotes Piner coach that they were partly motivated to win big because the Piner JV lost 50-14. Anyone buy that--a JV result significantly alters a varsity contest?

Yeah some of these games are headscratchers seems like they are putting their young men at risk physically and demoralize them to the point they don’t want to come out to play anymore........they rather sit home and play Fortnite

The article said Piner only played 18 players the entire game. If that is so, it is a really bad show of sportsmanship on the Coaches part. Using a JV loss as a loss for running up the Varsity score is odd to say the least.

mc415, I know video games are partly getting blamed for low football turnout, but I really don't think that is the case for athletes who consider playing football. I think that yes, they get demoralized by losing, and then, if they are not starters, do a cost-benefit analysis and decide they are better off concentrating on the sport(s) where they do start or have a chance for being a starter. The effect is the same, of course--rosters with 25 or so players (i.e., the starters). All the more reason to play your second string every opportunity you have, imho.

Well it’s nice to see Piner having the season they are. I have zero problem with the scores, it’s just how they might have gotten there. If they only played 18 and didn’t sub liberally after they were up big not sure what to say.
Continued success and they can get bumped up to the NBL Oak and they will be on the receiving end of a few of those when facing Newman or Rancho.

Yeah a few years ago, Willits JV put up 80+ on Fort Bragg so Perkins ran the score up on Willits.

as one once said...Winners know how to win, losers pretend as long as they can (or maybe I just came up with that). But, If the scores were ran up by back ups then just over matched in all facets of the game and nothing can be done as you never want to not play at 100%. If starters remain in when clearly out of hand coaches should blasted and in the AD office getting at the very least an earful.. If it was because JV was over matched then the go back to the original saying and not working on building a successful program but riding the horse you have at the moment which will surely pass
