At least it would stop all the public school fans from calling foul everytime Newman wins league.

How about....."relegation leagues" for football only? Based on by the success of the program....three or four tiers, and schools that finish first (and maybe second) in each tier gets "promoted" to the next level, and the ones in last place (or maybe two) get relegated to the one below.... your Elsies, etc. would be in the bottom tier for quite some time with the NCL schools and McKinleyville (for example) , but at some point they might finish on top and move up, etc.
Ben, your being a CN alum, salutes to you for suggesting an all private school league (I'm all for it, but I'm a known Newman detractor!!) But why would the privates want to ? It's much longer travel and they have a pretty sweet thing as it is now. Do you think a "football only" league would be more palatable for them?
Obviously I'm on a kick about realignment for football only. Anyone think it worthwhile or am I alone on this?
As Ben points out, nothing will happen with realignment for 3 or more years, but still fun to speak about...

I don't think there is any option other than to realign by size. It will give you the most consistency over time, and has the most ease of administration. The obvious catch though, is Newman. You have to provide the "opt up" option, and likewise the "play down" option, so that teams like Newman & Elsie can play competetive games.
The NBL would be larger, but you might be able to split it into two divisions (N&S) like college leagues do, and have a title game. IMO that would be pretty cool. The SCL, would prob initially be dominated by teams like HBurg, but would generally be much more even from top to bottom. Not to mention the increased rep the more competitive league may provide in our BCS like bowl system.

I would like nothing more than to see Cardinal Newman beat the crap out of Serra again. That series ended in 1996 I believe, when Newman spoiled Serra's homecoming. Tom Brady was the QB that season for Serra. Cardinal Newman and Marin Catholic would be a great contest as well, its really one fro the classics. Newman is the better private school in the NCS, excluding DLS. I think a private vs. private tradition would be a better tradition than Newman vs. Montgomery, solely for the reason that Newman is private.

Scobserver, the idea of competitive relegation leagues is a good one (been used in the CCS for years). I agree it is time to switch things up and that might be the best start. As far as football only leagues, that might be a tough sell, but could be done. As far Newman. Personally I don't care what league they are in. For everyone in the area that hates Newman (I think there might be a few on this board ), having CN in a seperate league probably won't be the answer. If I were CN, I'd jump at the chance at forming a catholic league. More and more kids would be jumping to go CN so I think it would be a huge benefit for them. Ben, "Cardinal Newman and Marin Catholic would be a great contest as well, its really one fro the classics. Newman is the better private school in the NCS, excluding DLS." Just curious what that is based on (CN the better school). NCS titles? Yes CN (10), MC (7). Or the all time head to head series between CN and MC. The one MC has won 8 out of 11 times they have meet on the field!

bella, did not know that Central section had been using relegation. Assume it's working well? The only problem would be any "traditional" rivals....they have to agree to schedule a non league game if they end up not in the same league.
As for the privates being together, they have to realize SOMEBODY must finish last--and these are schools unaccustomed to being in the bottom half of the standings in any sport. I'm all for it, but don't think it'll happen. Agree with bella, it would actually benefit CN as even more of the top athletes will want to go to Newman--but that trend can't get much worse than it already is, and that negative is easily balanced by the publics not having to get squashed by Newman every year and being in more competitive leagues.

I meant Newman being the better as far as football goes. Bishop O'Bowd has had some success, but thats about it, nothing too special (recently). Newman would be the better football program in the NCS catholic league.
I think its the Mount Hamilton league that has the tier program with another league. It sounds like a good program to me. The realignment comes in 2012, maybe a trial run in the North Bay would be a good idea. I believe the realignment is brought into question about every 4 years, so it would be a pretty nice try to see if it works. The NBL/SCL and maybe MCAL will be realigning anyway, why not try it.

I think realignment should be looked at every four years. 4 years from now things could be completely opposite, with the top schools at the bottom. The diffence is when the Newman coach is out handing out flyers to kids signing up for the youth football league. they can all go to that school if they like him. but they can't go to a public school unless they live in that district. (obviously) So Private a school league for all sports would seem to be the way to go.
