This off-season in the SCL all the talk has been about the RBs, and for good reason when you have guys like Keys, Sullivan, Erion, Sims, and Cattalini. But what about the other players? Who Else do you think we should be watching this season in the SCL that that are not RBs? One guy I'm watching is King the QB @ Windsor, he is a very athletic guy, and did fairly well as a WR last year for the jags. But there are always question marks about new starting QBs. Will he be able to play at the level needed to make the jag offense work? Because if the passing game isn't there Erion is going to have a long season. Teams will start committing to stop the run and Erion will not have as much success. But if the passing game is there Windsor will be a very tough offense to stop. Teams will be forced to play Windsor straight up, that will give Erion more holes to run through. So there is one thing I'm Watching, What players will you be watching?

Same goes for new QB's Mike Russell (PHS) and Nick Sherry (Casa). If the passing game isnt there 4 Petaluma then everyone will just put 8 in the box like they do every year. If Russel does good then it will be a lethal offense. Same goes with Casa. I think Sherry is the X factor. We all know Keys will do big things but it matters how big depending on how Sherry does. He has a lot of hype, but remember he hasn't played a varsity game yet so hopefully he comes through. Also who does Sonoma have coming back? They lost a lot of talent

You have to think back to last season King played QB most the the 2nd half of the petaluma game due to the starter geting hurt....so king's has just a little more time at QB then the other 3 !

At Petaluma they only start throwing in the 4th quarter when they are loosing. Since they are so out of practice it usually leads to a loss. Petaluma is very predictable. Mike Russell will be a running QB. His throwing is erratic. He has a great arm, but he is not very accurate. The back up QB is more of a throwing QB (Spencer Nave), but his running game is too slow for Ellison. If things are going well for the running game, you can expect only 2 to 3 passes per game.
Personally if I was the competition; I would focus defense on the running game and force Petaluma to pass.

Htown, I'm an SCL guy so here's my take, it may be a little off base as far as responding to your question.
I've seen King play a few times and think he should be solid for the Jags. He seems to be more of a running QB so it's hard say that he's not a RB in QB clothing? It remains to be seen if he can throw as well as he runs.
Cattalini is another kid that should turn in a solid year. Defensively he's been getting reps at SS throughout passing league which seems out of place, in my opinion he's the best LB the Hounds have which leaves the question...why put him in coverage? Also on the D side of the ball; look for Tanner Walker to have a breakout year with the Hounds at DB, he didn’t get many reps last year but has been very impressive in passing league.
I have to agree with Pops about Petaluma, stop the run and force them to pass, heck, that's been the game plan back to when I was playing! Will they be able to throw the ball? Maybe they won't have to... I'm not sure if they have other skilled position players that will make an impact other than at RB & QB (run).
Casa should be tough again this year (in SCL Play), it seems they can't put it together when they play the larger schools but if Keys can provide the horse power for long sustained drives it should help them out. Look for Sherry to provide the big play arm now and then they may allow them to finally get over the hump.
I thought that El Mo's QB threw the ball well in passing league, he looks like a big strong kid with decent arm strength to boot. The O line will determine if he uses that size and strength to throw or run?
I'm not sure about Analy besides the usual suspects, WR Bostock should be able to help the QB look a little better. Zanuto at QB could be a surprise.
Not sure about Sonoma.
Any idea about kids on the O line & D line? I'll post again with some kids I think we should look for at those spots.

Im looking for DJ King to be the second coming of Max Pond. Dont know if hes going to run that much, but I think he should be able to lead the team the same way.

Still what about the passing game? Windsors offense is not like Petalumas where they can get away with passing the ball 2 or 3 times a game. It has to have some kind of balance

Im not too sure about Windsor WRs, DJ was Windsors top WR last season. They do have some experience at the position, and the JV brings up at least one or two with varsity level talent. Coach Fayter has entertained so many different offenses in the last four years that anything is possible with this class of seniors. With the experience and solid players up front, I wouldnt rule out seeing some Toss. With a QB that can pass and run, and Erion at RB, I would hope he runs a playbook like Windsor had in 2005. The shotgun double backs, option and heavy pass would work great. Erion is solid and can work with a five man O-line. Whatever happens, the players need to know what they are running; no mistakes.

That's what I would worry about the most as a Windsor fan. It has to be hard to Learn a whole new offense from scratch. So it's almost unavoidable that they will make some mistakes. Plus (I can't believe this hasn't got brought up) What was a problem for Windsor last year? Turnovers! Or at least the games I watched Windsor last year it was the deciding factor in the game.

Petaluma's passing game is a joke. The coaches need to learn about a passing game before the team can pass. They just dont get it. And Russell isnt gonna do it for them with his arm.
Windsor needs to be careful rearranging their playbook too much. They need to have some stability or the kids will have a tough time. What happened to Reed a cpl years ago was too bad. I know they had injuries but that kid was special and he got lost when they went to the "Toss" Offense. But its about time they had a break out season with the amount of talent that school has seen. These stellar JV teams need to start rolling over into stellar Varsity teams. If not, I think they need to re-evaluate their program.
As far as the "rest" go. I think Casa is going to dominate because they are solid across the board with the "rest" of their positions. No huge stars except for Keys and Waggoner(sp?) but just solid "no mistakes" kind of players on their roster. And it looks like Herzog's staff is gonna have them firing on all cylinders.
I dont see much happening with Analy, El Mo, or especially Sonoma.
Dont know enough about Healdsburg but I know Kirkpatrick's staff always has them ready

Petalumas passing game is not a job, its ancient and non-existant. Petaluma will not beat up on teams in the NCS like a lot of fans here want them to if all they do is run the option. Even with Sims and Sullivan, the offense needs to have some balance.
Anyone know if Petaluma runs a slot sweep?

Just some random observations.
Watched the JC passing league this summer, caught some passing tournaments, and QB camps. I was impressed with a number of teams and players from this area. Newman; great fundamentals and organization. Analy, lots of questions; Bostock should be good, can they pass consistently down the field? Elmo looks further along than they have in the past, can they do anything in the season? It's hard not to root for them. QB is big and a good arm. I watched them play HBG one night; they did well. Casa will be very good, athletes and kids bought into the program. I watched King from Windsor in a couple of camps. I like the athleticism, decent arm. I am not convinced he is a classic QB at this stage. He will be great if Windsor runs the spread option. I'm not trying to knock him at all; he is just not a prototypical QB, could be a great option QB, DB later. I saw him, Petaluma, HBG, and Ukiah QBs early in the season at a camp. Followed up later and still have the same questions.
I have not heard much about HBG on this board. I watched them quite a bit. I am interested in how the coaches seem to get the most out of a limited player pool. I have to say they look like they could surprise people. There is a receiver named Ian Gallagher who looked real good; not fast at all, but great routes and good hands. Kozel, one of the fastest track kids in the area (beat Sullivan in 100m I hear) is also a receiver. I really liked the CB/WR Walker. This kid has serious quicks; looks like he really understands the game. I watched him put on a clinic for Newman; 4 picks and numerous catches on offense. I would take a closer look at him if he had a little more size. As was noted on the board, the QB, Collins, is interesting. Good size, good arm, looks athletic, great mechanics on footwork, sometimes looks like he rushes the ball too much; squeezes hard. What I like about this kid is ball placement and accuracy. This probably has a lot to do with coaching, but the kid reads defenses very well and puts the ball where his guy is going to get it. I think he is a sleeper to watch this year. I would like to see twenty pounds on him; looks like he could carry the weight. In talking with folks the big issue with this team is the offensive and defensive lines; or lack of. As I said the coaching staff seems to get the most out of a small group of kids; if they can get a line, this team will surprise folks. I think they don't have the horses to compete against the bigger schools in the area consistently (750 vs 1800+)and are probably a division too high for the state bowl series. I am impressed by the fundamental soundness of this team.

Yes, I would have to agree with go cougs. You know TK will have that bunch of boys ready to play. The lines look as though they may be ok. Some of the guys coming up from JV and guys that were on the bench last year could do well. A linemen i would keep my eye on is a Guy named Trey Davis, he's fairly big and very strong. He lead the JV team in sacks his sophmore year. didn't get much playing time last year but that's because they had seniors across the board.
