Eureka, Arcata, Del Norte, and Fortuna participated in their league srimmage this past Friday. The format of their srimmage is that each team plays the other once as gets 12 plays on both defense and offense against each team.
As expected, Eureka dominated every team on both sides of the ball. On offense Eureka was led by the power running game of Soma Vainuku and Jeff Faulk, and the receiving exploits of Kenny Spaight. They scored three times on each team. On defense, Eureka was stingy, shutting out both Del Norte and Fortuna. Their second string defense did allow a long touchdown pass against Arcata.
Fortuna appeared to be the next best team there. Their offense had some success against Arcata and Del Norte, getting into the end zone once or twice against both. Their offense struggled against Eureka. Their defense did have a couple nice plays against Eureka, including a sack. If Fortuna stays healthy, I could see them making a little noise in NCS Div. 3 this year.
For Arcata, it's a numbers game. With only 18 players, they absolutely have to stay healthy to have success this season. They have a nice core of talented players led by TE/LB Noah Wheeler. In the scrimmage they had some strong scoring drives against Del Norte and Fortuna, and popped a long pass play on Eureka. If they are healthy when they play Fortuna and Del Norte this year, with a good game plan they could get a win.
Del Norte seems the furthest away right now in terms of preparation. They looked dismal on both sides of the ball against Eureka. They are a team who will definitely get better as the season goes along because they have a lot of players with potential, who just didn't seem game ready yet. I think they have a bye the first week, which would be perfect for this team.
Eureka opens as home this week against an always strong Shasta team out of Redding. If Eureka comes out strong and gets a win, it could be the start of great season. We will see.
