Now hear me out. As a player, one of the best places to play (even though it was a dump) was the "old" Rancho because the stands were so small and they always get a decent crowd, it ALWAYS felt like there were thousands of people there, and both sides, too. Now because both HOME and VISITING stand are doubled in size, so it's like "oh, an O.K. crowd. Big deal."
But overall, El Mo is the best. Especially with all the trees, and the cool weather. BUT, its SO, SO, SO empty. It even echoes there because the attendance is so poor. Glad to hear this is one of their best teams in years. (Good for them).
Check out my posting on the kickers thread. All I'll say is.....it's pretty interesting

good points viking. A school with "real fans" get decent crowds even when losing. Perhaps the most loyal fans are in NCL and the real tiny towns. I think most SCL teams are okay about drawing a crowd despite a losing team, with the NBL somewhat worse. In the "old days" bleachers were packed everywhere despite team's records--at least everywhere they played Friday nights.

The old Rancho field wasnt one of my favorites. Dirt track, and the field itself was terrible. The four light polls was always interesting too.

Most of the fields you all mention are just fine...unless you are a handicapped fan that needs a wheel chair.
Only the new fields, that some refer to as "cookie cutter" fields have truely made the games enjoyable for those that can't climb up in the bleachers.
Montgomery and the Ranch's new fields have the handicapped sections set up so those walking to and from their seats pass behind the handicap section. At Newman, those in wheelchairs share a space with the garbage cans and everyone walks in front of them the entire game. I hope they correct this when they upgrade their bleachers.

Saw my first game at the REC tonight. Great atmosphere and good football game. Healdsburg and Alhambra played one of the more physical football games I have seen in some time. Both teams used a tight end and a fullback all night. You dont see that often in this spread offense era. The coaches kept pounding the ball all night. Both teams were delivering big hits. Healdsburg had multiple receivers open deep but there QB was very innacurate and missed them almost every time. The REC serves up the biggest hot dog I have ever had at any field. It was a fun night!!!!!

1. Eureka High School - Absolutely unique, walking down to the field through a winding trail of redwoods. One sided bleachers on the visitors side, even watching film of Albee stadium is dope. 2. Napa/Vintage High, Napa 3. Rec Park, Healdsburg 4. Arnold Field, Sonoma 5. Durst Field, Petaluma

Kilian missed 3 deep balls. He played well, and kept Hburg in the game.

brandonlee, eureka stadium sounds great....can you describe more what you mean "one sided bleachers on the visitors side"?
Napa Memorial Stadium, of course and it hasn't even been mentioned--a classic.
stogi, excellent point about how bleachers should be convenient for those who don't walk well/are in wheelchairs

I vote for Ferndale. At the fairgrounds, horse track in the back in a town that time hasnt touched. They also broadcast all the games on the local radio!!! How cool is that. Plus they do it without the mystique of "Friday Night Lights". Go enjoy the saturday afternoon sun in Ferndale if you can.
Second would be Tomales. Especially against their rival St. Vincents. Like I said in another post, the lights, the fog and the local support is just amazing.
Plus, both fields are still GRASS!!!
Their is some good old fashioned football in this area that we should all appreciate without the negative talk of recruiting and whos better than who!

1. Memorial Stadium. Big Stands right on top of the field. Stands stretch from end zone to end zone. The place gets rocking. With large stands so close the crowd noise plays a factor. The stands are steep too, so even the top rows feel like there right on top of the field. Press/coaching boxes on both sides. 2. Awe....Ferndale - Great old school wooden (painted red) home Football stands. (Away stands are weak, but its a small school. Hell, Newman's away stands are a joke too, whats their excuse?) Stands are right on top of the field. The people are football fans and very respectful. Normally there will be three to four generations of families watching their sons play ball. One poster said the town practically shuts down during the game, he was not kidding. The school has around 160 kids total, so figure 75 boys total, and 60 of them play football. The percentage is truly amazing. Mendocino High - Very similar to Ferndale (as far as the field in concerned) except you can throw a rock into the ocean from the west side of the field. 3. Rancho Cotate - I actually like the feel, when its a packed house on the new field. You get quality large school football. Big crowds, and their band is rocking! As far as the new fields are concerned, Rancho does it right. Montgomery has a similar feel because they draw large crowds too, but THEY ARE MISSING THE BAND? ? I heard there was a feud between the band teacher and one of the coaches years ago, but this is just hear-say. 4. Rec Park. Need I say more. The crowds are loud and rowdy (in a good way). Down town. Every other parent seems to have an ice chest in the truck for halftime (not on school grounds). No track/ right on the field. Great small town field with a high quality product. The games always seem exciting. 5. Fort Bragg is probably next for me, except while playing there in pop warner, I remember playing on one side of the field, while seagulls were crapping on the other side of the field. Talk about a home field advantage:(

At albee stadium in eureka there are only bleachers on the visitors side of the field. opposing fans sharing bleachers with the band creates such a different feel

Carrillo's Tri-tip is great. And what do you mean Carrillo's field was good until the lights went up? ** Healdsburg Rec is that the same place they have the baseball field too? Cause that's one of the greatest places to see some baseball games (little league and senior leagues) cause of the old school wooden stadium. If that's the same place I love baseball and football there. SRHS's field is great too. I like Rancho's field but the stands seem farther away than other HS's. Worse place I would have to say is Piner for me - as a visitor that is. Nice scoreboard though.
Good luck this week everyone!

They're all pretty good as far as taste goes. What sets one apart from others can change not only on a weekly basis but as the night rolls on and that one thing is how well the meat is cooked.
When are people gonna realize that tri tip for sandwhiches has to be cooked at least medium well in order for human teeth to bite through the meat? Especially older, worn down dull human teeth. Nothing worse then biting into a trip tip sandwhich and pulling out a whole slab of meat only to have it slap down on your chin like a dog's tongue on a hot day. Then you're left to grab it with your fingers and pull it away from your mouth while trying to bite through it. Between the mayo, horseradish and jalapenos, the stuff is slippery as snot and with any luck, when you do finally bite through it, the piece you're pulling on won't go flying out of your hands and land in the gal in front of you's hair! And you know all that's gonna take place while two cheerleaders are in the midst of selling you 50/50 raffle tickets. Impressive Dad.
shees....cook the meat!
