The St. Vincent vs. Tomales game is probably the biggest small school game this week and one of the best rivalries in the empire. First game was almost 60 years ago in 1951 (12-12 tie). However they did not play on a regular basis immediately after. Rivalry was continued in 1967 and they have played continuously since. SV holds the series edge 24-17 with 2 ties.
St. Vincent
Head coach: Gary Galloway (25th season) 156-93-1. Graduate of Analy High School, SRJC and Humboldt St. Also coaches baseball (421 wins and 5 NCS titles)
Last season record: 11-1
Mascot: Mustangs. Colors: Blue and white with red Home
Field: Kiely Field on campus, no lights, synthetic turf
NCS Titles: 4 (84') (93') (05') (08')
Returns 4 starters on offense and 3 on defense.
Quarterback Josh Wheless, who threw for over 1375 yards and 14 TD's out of their spread offense returns. Started to grasp the offense towards the end of last season (38x57 for 579 yards and 7 TD's in last 3 games.. Kris Farinha is their leading returning running back. Farinha rushed for 740 yards and six touchdowns last year after gaining over 1000 yards as a sophomore in 07'. Zack Schlagel will lead deep receiving corp. Leading returning lineman Spencer Willin keys the offensive line. The line is smaller (average 210 pounds), but athletic. Lost several players on a defense that gave up just 66 points in 12 games last season. Players hoping to take over on defense are linebacker Anthony Battaglia, Jesse O' Keefe and defensive end Jeff Matthews.
Tomales
Head coach: Leon Feliciano (14th season) 92-47-3. Graduate of Archbishop Riordan High School, San Francisco St. Previously coached at Lincoln High (SF) and Carlmont High (Belmont).
Last season record: 8-3
Mascot: Braves Colors: Black, red and white
Home Field: Andy Azevedo Stadium on campus, lights, grass
NCS Titles: 5 (83') (95') (98') (01') (02')
Returns 7 starters on offense and 8 on defense.
Offense is based around the Don Markham "toss" offense, which has continuously produces 1000 yard rushers and last year rushed for over 2800 yards. RB Stan Moody returns after rushing for over 1775 yards and 26 TD's. RB's Michael Schumacher (614 yards, 7 TD's) and Richie Douglas-Nielson (438 yards, 7 TD's) also return. Junior Javier Isias takes over at QB and has good speed. Line features all league returners Andrew Murphy (6-3, 265) and Jesse Padilla (6-4, 260).
Game will most likely be decided on defense and at the line of scrimmage. Tomales has the size and experience advantage. St. Vincent should have the speed advantage. Tomales will try to pound ball and might throw only a few passes. St. Vincent will try and spread the ball around countering the size disadvantage and using their quickness.
Series Facts:
Most points scored: St. Vincent 44 (00')
Shutouts: 8. Tomales (2) / St. Vincent (6)
Games decided by at touchdown or less: 14
Home team has won 21 times, visitor 20 and 2 ties.
Longest win streak in series: 7 Tomales (67'-73')

Bella, That is fantastic knowledge about both schools. I think SV will win this one but Tomales always has a good team. Both have small school coaching legends. I'm looking forward to the Friday night tradition and great tri tip sandwiches.
Jimmy, Your right about rivalry at its best.
4andacloud, I know Frank well (great basketball coach too) didn't know he was a Tomales guy. Good stuff.

I think best small school match-up this week is Middletown @ Salesian. Last year they were 1-1 vs each other. Middletown winning in the regular season 49-20, and Salesian winning in the 2nd round of the playoffs 22-21 @ Middletown. These two teams always have a say in the class A playoffs. Both teams were 10-2 last year.

What a joke. St. Vincent will roll Tomales in the second best small school game of the week. Coach Foltmer at Middletown runs the best small school program anywhere close to Sonoma County now and they are playing traditionally strong Salesian this week. These two teams played in playoffs last year. Tomales got whacked at St Bernard last week and that boring, easy to stop (cut o-line and plug middle) offense will get whacked again this weel by St. Vinnie. Gimmick offenses dont work. Ferndale has remained a powerhouse small school because they added the fly offense to their veer option to present more challenges to opponents.

tomales has one of the biggest o lines in the empire, and when i was reading the program it said brandon shumacker can clean 290lbs! WOW! Sv's farinha is a good running back. I love tomales's offense i think it makes you tougher than thats sissy a$$ spread "o".

Tomales is always big! And yes they are always tough. But apparently "tougher" doesnt win football games. Sounds like Tomales is in trouble if this was their best team in years and they are starting 0-2. Im sure they will turn it around by play-offs.
I'd like to see how Tomales would do against the bigger, Small Schools (oxymoron?) like Middletown or Ft. Bragg? S.V. is good but not quite their caliber.
Interesting dynamic for two Rivals: Tomales is foot to foot and smash into you with 3 yds. and a cloud of dust, where St. Vinny's is spread you out and finesse. Completely opposite offense ideologies. What a great back story to a great rivalry!

Actually, if you know anything about Tomales Football they are not alway big, and yes, bigger doesn't mean tougher and apparently we saw that Friday night. I think that would be great for for Tomales to play "bigger"schools like Ft. Bragg, Middletown etc, like they used to, but St.Vincents is considered a bigger school compared to Tomales, Tomales has under 200 kids, while St V is close to 400, that is a big difference. But its a great Rivalry.
It also hurts when one of of their best players out with a knee injury for the SV game and partial St. Bernards game, that hurts when you have a roster of 16-17 guys. As for being one of the best teams for Tomales in recent years they should be, they will get it together they always do.

The SV vs Tomales rivalry will always be a good one. Not one of the Tomales kids ever gave up or hung their heads even when most never got a breather with the Braves small roster. St Vincent is not very big but has some speed at the skill positions. Both will do fine in league.
