Not sure if anyone else made the trek to Loomis this weekend to check out the Del Oro vs. Granite Bay game, but I left work early on Friday in order to do so. Thanks to coach who suggested arriving early, I got there before the kickoff of the JV game and found a great spot on the 50 yard line. And good thing as the stands were absolutely packed by half time of the JV game.
And the game turned out to be well worth the 2 hour drive. Not only an exciting game that went to OT, but this was easily the highest level of high school football I've seen this year. It almost felt like watching a college game. And despite Del Oro winning in OT, I'm tempted to say Granite Bay was actually the better of the two teams. The game truly boiled down to two dropped passes by GB late in the 4th quarter as they were driving for a potential score. Either catch would have given them a 1st down (they lost the ball on downs), and likely would have scored on one. So one could argue that Del Oro played the better game and made fewer mistakes. Regardless, two great teams and just an amazing atmosphere. I've heard they estimated 5000 people in attendance, which is pretty impressive considering capacity is only 3000.
Lastly, the most impressive players were Del Oro's Bryce Pratt, who rushed for over 200 yards and likely has a promising future as a Div I running back, and GB's sophomore QB Brendan Keeney. And speaking of impressive, GB also had a sophomore OL that is listed at 6'5" 280 lbs. How big will he be in two years?
