There are probably hard to find game statistics, but what are the chances that Montgomery's defensive performance of holding Cardinal Newman to 25 yards of total offense for an entire game as being some kind of defensive record? If it's not a record of some kind, it's probably pretty darn close...it is really an astounding statistical anomaly and one that will likely not be duplicated in any matchup between any teams for quite a long time - and one that NOBODY would ever have thought could happen to Newman by Montgomery (or by any other team against them for that matter).

No, it's not a record setting performance. Considering how sacks and INT's go down as negative yardage, it's not unheard of to see a team held to zero or negative offensive yards. As a matter of fact, I think Petaluma did so to Santa Rosa earlier this year.
But it doesn't take anything away from Montgomery's domination.

I guess you're right there, regarding sacks as negative rushing yardage, and it probably has occurred before (however, interceptions are NOT negative yardage against offensive stats)...

In 1971 Rancho help Piner to 6 yard total. In 1972 they held Healdburg to 20. I doubt that either of those are records as Ben already stated.

It was not Ben who stated this (above...it was "Penguin", not that this matters, really)...where do you get the information about what happened nearly 40 years ago? In any case, it would be my guess that the above noted games were between teams that were less evenly matched (or perceived as such) than the game that took place between Montgomery and Newman the other night.

Petaluma did hold Santa Rosa to a negative number in the opener this season...and one first down. I am going to bet that sometime somewhere...a team was held first downless...

Impressive, no doubt, re: Petaluma vs. Santa Rosa, but again, a match-up of teams that were fairly far apart in perception of relative quality...as Montgomery faces Santa Rosa this week, it might be an interesting comparison as to how they do - not that there is any expectation of holding them to negative yardage, or only a single first down, but nobody expected the performance that occurred against Newman either, so you never know.

The Rancho records for football have all been compiled in a book. I happen to have a copy of that record book.
