Its official, the Redwood Empire will soon have its very own 8-man ball league.
This season the NCL II will be playing 9-man ball minus one contest. Calistoga vs. Tomales will be 11-man but their role in the Div. V playoffs is unknown should they qualify.
Next season the NCL II will move to an 8-man league with no determination on any possible playoffs after the regular season. Calistoga and Tomales will be looking to move to a new league because they would like to continue 11-man ball. The league is not yet determined. The nearest realignment by the NCS will be for the 2012 season though if all teams in a league agree and the NCS agrees there can be a small realignment.

Very positive, needed and necessary moves. Fewer kids risking serious injury by forcing themselves to play when they should lay off a game or two....fewer forfeited games or near-forfeited games. There are 8 or 9 man teams in other sections, one would think it would be easy to work out that the NCLII teams can join North Coast Section teams in playoffs.

Im not 100% on the 8-man teams entering the Div. V playoffs with 11-man teams that have been playing that way all season. I think it would be pretty cool to see the top 4 teams play eachother in week #11 and #12 in their own 4-team playoff bracket.
This move should hopefully stop the forfeits.

oops, I meant NCL II teams join the playoffs with leagues from the North Section (Chico/Redding areas). I think there are at least two in the NS. I agree, an 8 man team should not join in playoffs with teams that played 11 man all season.

The new league for 11 man football will consist of Tomales, Calistoga, St. Vincent and Upper lake. And the vote was unanimous and unless Gill changes things it will stay that way.

Hmm, so both St. Vincent and Upper lake will leave the NCL I - South leaving them with only 3 teams? Will a team from the North move to the South??

whoa, that will be a lopsided league, but good for them.
Four teams in four different counties! How about NomaNapMarLake Leauge?

Hell the old NCL II used to have 6 teams from 5 counties. Scobserver I think that name might stick.

Yes Calistoga and Tomales are so far the only teams in NCLII that are able to field 11 man teams. The League is not officially a 9 man this season. Yes, it is official like cotterstone stated, In 2011 The NCL II will be St Vincents, Calistoga, Tomales, Upper Lake and a posibility of another team. The teams from NCL II that opted to play 8 man will form a new League. I believe the Leagues will be NCLI, NCL II, NCLIII. NCL III was created because of enrollment and logistics were considered as well, for NCLII and NCL III. The teams that have opted to play 8 man have had declining enrollment for years, although Tomales has declining enrollment as well, they chose to stay in a 11 man league. Thanks for adding this to your site.

Any ideas why so many programs are experiencing lower enrollements? All I can come up with is people moving away because of the economy but most of these towns are small to begin with. Sounds like two 11-man leagues and one 8-man league is the way to go but they really need to come up with a new name for the league. North Central I, II, III? III? It just seems played out, its time for a new name. How about Redwood Empire League? Or better yet, NCSNBL League??

Hardhitter is correct, The leagues will be ncl1-ncl2-ncl3. The logistics are not just lower enrollment but also travel time. Personally I think Coach at Tomales is doing the right thing by deciding to play 11 man. He should have one of the 2 best teams in our very small league. Final ratification will be on the 9th and it will pass. Ben once again thank you for having a great site. And a big thank you to the posters for your support for small school football.

WOW!! I cant believe a team like St. Vincent would agree to a league like that! In 2009, vs Tomales 33-18, Upper Lake 52-0, and Calistoga 46-0. Sounds like they want to step down and beat up on these teams just like they opt to in Div. 5 Play-offs. I was always impressed with how well they competed against D. 4 schools during the season. Not anymore!
I cant see what they expect to gain from this new league. Plus the HUGE blow to their enrollment. What Petaluma middle schooler is going to want to play for a program that beats up a cup cake league?

Also in this league will be teams like RVC, Sonoma Academy. Neither have football programs but both are d5 powerhouses in Soccer, Basketball and Volleyball. It's about all sports when changing leagues. Yes I agree that for football and baseball SV will dominate and that is why Coach Galloway will schedule the same tough d4 season in the future with teams like Fort Bragg, Middletown, Cloverdale. Mite, SV was asked to be part of a change and they did what they had to for the betterment of all sports as well as logistics. You tell me what new league the Mustangs should have gone into. They tried several times and were denied access. Go ahead and give me the league they should be playing in. You must know something that the NCS doesn't.

Why make a new league to begin with?
Put Calistoga into the NCL I - North and put Tomales in the NCL I - South, end of story, so further worries, no new league, no changing more teams around just to accomodate only two programs.
