Yeah I had the same question. The only Matt Tomlin I can think of works for the city of Santa Rosa and is more of a baseball guy. Although I think he was an football assistant coach at St. Bernards years ago, so maybe one in the same.

I wish him all the luck in the world, but I'm not happy at all. The same guy the passed up this year is the same guy they passed up last season when Meredith lead his team into a disaster. John Antonio was clearly the best selection available. From what I hear, Tomlin knows a number of the Piner staff, including the AD and backetball coach.
Good luck Matt, and good luck to Piner.

HA HA HA HA HA HA! JUST LIKE PINER! HAVE NO CLUE WHAT THE HELL THEY ARE DOING. LET ME SEE....HIRE A COACH THAT HAS NO PREVIOUS EXP. AS A HEAD COACH, OR HAS NEVER COACHED AT THE LEVEL OF THE N.B.L.. OR HIRE ANTONIO, WHO HAS HEAD COACHING EXP. AND HAS COACHED AT ONE OF THE TOUGHEST PLACES TO COACH. AND HAD A PLAN AND A STAFF ALL READY TO GO TO WORK. HEY PINER, YOU ARE NOT PREPARING TO PLAY HOOPA VALLEY, IT WILL BE NEWMAN, RANCHO, MONTY, CARILLO ETC. ETC. WHAT A JOKE!! HAVE FUN LOOKING UP AT ELSIE AFTER 10 GAMES NEXT YEAR. HEARD ANTONIO HAS HAD AN OFFER TO COACH AT CASA, HMMM NOT GOOD ENOUGH FOR PINER, BUT GOOD ENOUGH FOR CASA!!! HA HA HA YA I'M STILL LAUGHING AT THIS BRILLIANT DECISION!!! EXCUSE ME WHILE I GO HURL!

HAHA! You actually made me laugh a bit. Hoopa Valley, LOL. I didnt even think about the coaching staff issue. Antonio did have a group ready to jump in and take charge. Tomlin Im not so sure. I dont know about not having experience. Well he hasnt been a HC, but does have some good experience in what was a very successful program. Piner could have done much worse than hiring Tomlin (Like keeping Meredith). I dont know a lot about him, or what offense he runs, but I would very much like to meet him and talk some football. I really think Antonio was the better choice, but again, Piner could have done a lot worse.

Matt Tomlin passed for over 5,000 yards at St. Bernards High School before turning down college football offers to pitch on scholarship at the University of Nebraska in the Big 12. I haven't talked to Matt since he took the job but knowing him the ball will fly at Piner in 09. School staff member said that Tomlin landed big time D-Coordinator from Dixon High School in Sac league.

PINER7, NO I WAS NOT GONNA BE ON ANTONIO'S STAFF. ALL I AM IS A HUGE FAN OF REDWOOD EMPIRE FOOTBALL. ALL SCHOOLS INCLUDED! FURTHERMORE LETS NOT START COMPARING SIZE OF SCHOOLS, I AM THE BIGGEST FAN OF THE "SMALL" SCHOOLS, THOSE COACHES AND KIDS HAVE TO WORK HARDER THAN MOST OF THE "BIG" SCHOOLS SIMPLY BECAUSE OF THE NUMBERS GAME. THOSE KIDS AT THE "SMALL " SCHOOLS RARELY COME OFF THE FIELD. I WAS SIMPLY SAYING THAT PREPARING FOR HOOPA VALEY IS NOT THE SAME AS PREPARING FOR NEWMAN. I DO NOT KNOW COACH TOMLIN, AND IF YOU READ MY POST CLOSELY YOU WILL SEE THAT I NEVER ONCE TOOK A PERSONAL SHOT AT HIM,(UNLIKE YOU) WAS JUST MAKING COMMENTS BASED ON WHAT I AM READING AND KNOW. CHECK YOURSELF PINER7 RELAX A LITTLE, IS THIS NOT WHAT THIS BOARD IS HERE FOR, OPINIONS OF ALL PEOPLE?

Antonios time at Richmond cannot be compared with other coaching jobs. Richmond is basically ready to disolve their football program, because they show absolutly zero support for any coach that takes over. Antonio did everything he could and more. I would really like to see him at Casa, that would be great for Coach Herzog, and would help Casa win another league title.

Piner player told me that Tomlin hired Jason Little as O-line/special teams coach. Little played for Coach Simons at SRJC before playing at Eastern Oregon University as lineman and long snapper. My source did not know if any other coaches have been hired yet.

Piner and Eureka are trying to work out preseason game. Piner is also starting strength and conditioning program next week. Sounds like new staff is trying to turn things around.

Hmm, Piner and Eureka should be interesting! I know Eureka wont be playing Foothill in their week #0 contest from last season. Eureka and Piner could play a week #0 game, but who would Piner drop?
