I am in San Diego, so I can't really tell how they look. But do you think since they are playing tougher opponents in the first three games that they will be strong in league and also the playoffs? What does everyone think?

Hard to say Troy, they played the same teams last year, maybe just a slow start

0-3 to begin I think is a very good bet. In league theres no way Newman will finish anything other than 6-1 or 7-0. Rancho is strong, but I think Monty is overrated. Newman is a playoff team that should win at least one NCS game, but beyond that is anyones guess.

called my brother who went, he said the final score was : 48 Del Oro 14 CN. DO put in second and third string in the early 3rd qtr. Could of crushed CN even if they really wanted to.

Did anyone go to this game? ? Can we get a score please??? I was at the game and had to leave at the end of the 3rd quarter with Del Oro leading 49-14. And it wasn't even that close. Del Oro was scary good. Their running back had close to 150 yards in the first quarter alone. He's good and was able to break free more than a few times, but the holes were gigantic. CN's defense simply couldn't stop them. Ever.

Gotta wonder Ben how you determine that Newman is so strong this year after 2 consecutive blowouts? If Monty is overrated, what does this say about Newman? Can't be totally on schedule strength...seems to me that Monty did play a rather strong team in their opening game this year and while the result was predictable, hard to think that Newman would have done any better against Grant. The proof is in the pudding...Newman does not look very good this year.

Dont think I said Newman was strong. After seeing them against Central I knew they werent a Newman team from the past, but you cant have a 13 win team every year. I do think Newman is stronger than Montgomery. Both Central and Del Oro have legit Div. I players on their team.

As does Grant, no doubt. And perhaps Del Oro was somewhat, or very, underrated. And maybe Newman is more the victim of playing very strong teams. I just think it is really a stretch to annoint Newman an unblemished, or virutally unblemished league record based upon a pre-season expectation. What have they shown so far? Very little. And while you MAY end up being correct in where Newman ends up, you cannot reasonably make such an assessment on the basis of their first 2 games. It is hard to imagine that if it were some team other than Newman who was getting throttled in 2 straight games, no matter who the competition, that you would say those teams would be shoe-ins to run through the league schedule. Until Newman shows something, why should they get a pass? Maybe it is because you are being somewhat less than objective?

As a matter of interest where would you put Newman in the NBL?
I would have then above Elsie Allen, Santa Rosa, Piner, and Ukiah to begin with. Carrillo I would think should finish 4th in league unless they are upset by Ukiah. Though Newman couldnt perform well against two potential state level teams, doesnt mean they cant beat Carrillo. That leaves Monty and Rancho. I have Newman on the same level as both and think they should finish right in the middle. I would base this on coaching experience, success on the freshman and JV levels with both classes, experience playing tough opponents, and the overall success of the program in the past. How else to rate a program than how they have done in the past?

I agree with all the above...I think that clearly, based upon what we can suppose, that Newman, Rancho and Monty are quite likely, as usual, to be the top 3 teams in the NBL. That said, I just do not think that it is reasonable to conclude yet, that Newman, or either of the other "big 3" are going to go 7-0, or 6-1...any of the three could forseeably be somewhere between 5-2 to 7-0 in league...again, that is ANY of them could, but it seems prepsoterous, once again, to conclude that Newman is the likeliest to be that one, or even highly likely based upon this years performance to date. If anything, Rancho should be the one who would be the odds on favorite to be that team, based strictly on this year's performance...Monty is an unknown. Any team in the NBL would have gotten smashed by Grant, then they smashed a probably fairly weak Lincoln team. Next week's game against Casa should put it into a better perspective.

the Quality opponents that newman faces in preseason all with in the Top 5 of the Div. newman has showed they can have lasting drives and score on teams of this calibur. Goal line stand in the central game. Newman was in the central game till 3rd QTR and they scored twice agaisnt Del oros starting D.Monty Didnt even get in the endzone?Makes me to think this Newman team once adjustments are made we will have a competiive league season.
