After tonight's game with Montgomery, it appears that either: Montgomery is very, very good, or Newman just is not, or a combination of both. For those of you who saw this game, it was the most one-sided any 9-0 game could possibly be...don't know the final stats, but it is doubtful if Newman had as much as even 75 yards of total offense. Montgomery's offense continued to sputter and failed to take advantage of several golden opportunities - this could have easily been a 30-0 game, but there is no doubt that Montgomery's defense is very, very strong. I said it a month ago that we would only know after this game what kind of team Newman is this year, and it appears that they are quite ordinary, and could be at risk for losing even more games in the NBL season.

I think the big story of the game lies not with Montgomery at all. They did what they had to do pure and simple. I expected nothing more and nothing less of that program. #1 Story: Newmans offense - just didnt work and didnt produce #2 Story: Newmans defense - stopped Montgomery a number of times in their own territory and forced a number of turnover on downs. I havent read any stories or looked at any stats, but it had to have been at least 4 turnover on downs. Newmans defense did their job. I think the two things no fan would expect is #1, Newmans lack of overall offense, and #2, the Newman defense. Montgomery did what they had to do, so I think there is no surprise in Monty winning.

Ben - I know you love your Cardinals, but I think the Story is Montgomery's Defense. Give credit where credit is due.
1. Monty gave CN a shutout for the first time since Rancho's undefeated (13-0) team did so in 2002, 20-0.
2. Held CN to under 25 yds of O. Wow!
3. Take into account Montgomery held Rancho to 6 pts and Casa's O scored only 14 on them.

Here's the shocker with Montgomery's defense...the team they have allowed the most points against...Elsie Allen! Indeed, you have to consider that this is an extremely stout defensive unit. There was no talk before the game about how Newman's offense was suspect, even if they are not the same team they have been for the past several years, but certainly no one was saying that Newman had a weak or ineffective offense, so I agree with 4thqrtercomeback...you have to give it up to Montgomery's D...25 yards of offense for an entire game? This is virtually unheard of.

Yeah Monty's defense was solid all night against Newman. The Newman QBs (James and Sullivan) were running for there lives the entire game . The pass rush from Monty was the key to there success in my opinion.

Monty's defense is very solid...big boys up front & Shull making plays behind them. As stated above Newman has some issues on offensel, but I must say there defense looked very good. I think Newman's D will keep them in every game, including the play-offs. It will be up to Cronin to adjust the offense to see how far they will go.

It could be that the Newman offense isn't as strong as people think.

I don't see how you can say that people wern't talking about newmans offense when the subject of quarterback change has been on here for a month.
[glow=red,2,300]no one was saying that Newman had a weak or ineffective offense,[/glow]

Sense the change at QB, the Newman offense is weaker. Once Newman played tougher NBL teams(Santa Rosa and Monty) then Allen and Piner the weakness showed up. James should have stayed at QB. Newman had more total offense vs. Del Oro (285 yds) and Palma (99 yds) then vs. Santa Rosa (250 yds) and Monty (23 yds), in addtion Newman had 201 yds offense vs. Central considering Newman had over 100 yds in penaties Del Oro, Central and Palma are much better then any team in the NBL. Newman should have stuck with James even if he is not as good as his predecessor's, but work the program around his skills. Throw underneath, the option, screens, quick outs, QB runs, and more play action. These types of plays work with the personnel they have and can eventully open up limited use the read-run and medium passes. Build on some of the good things that worked in the pre-season, there were at least 6 good offensive drives during those games. Sometimes even good coaches get stuck and take the wrong road, it is not to late to go back . Newman is capable of winning the next three games and making the play-offs, if they get back to what the worked on all off-season, and they can be a much stronger club to everyones suprise

I agree that CN needs to make an offensive scheme change to get some more protection for whoever is playing QB. Coach Cronin should be able to make the adjustments. I also agree that they will still make play-offs. Don't know about Santa Rosa being grouped w/ Monty as a "tough" opponent, they are 1-6 & just lost to piner.

Newman did have James in for almost 1/2 the Montgomery game, due to an injury to Sullivan, and it did not make a difference...could have been because the scheme, regardless of the quarterback, was not going to work, however...again, though, was likely a combination of an ineffective scheme for the available personnel, combined with a monster defensive effort by Montgomery.

Without a doubt Monty's defense played very well and the deserve all the credit for the win. The focus of the blog is what for Newman to do going forward

As for the "focus of the blog is what for Newman to do going forward", I guess this is a matter of interpretation...and can be whatever is relevant to a discussion of the local football story. I'm the one who started the blog...guess I could have titled it "Montgomery's Defense", but I did not although the story of Cardinal Newman's (lack of) success is intricately related to Montgomery's defensive performance, but anything about Newman does tend to get more of a response than that of most other schools.
