ella...not being touchy at all, just found it curious that your comment about how this is a Newman blog so that is the focus, etc., dismisses any other discussion (though, in fairness, I did title the blog simply "Newman", so I guess that does imply a certain focus), and as you noted, these blogs tend to change direction and I guess this is what i like about them, that one comment can lead to another and then to another perspective and they become fluid in that way, instead of singular in focus. Guess next time I will be more thoughtful about the title of a blog so that it can go in different directions and not be seen as losing the focus.

Rumor has it that the newman cardinals are tryin a double wing this week.. if so that would put james at qb put sullivan or stout at tailback. so throw the ball against an average defense sounds good to me

The double wing is a timing type offense, tough to to get good at in a week. My vote is to stick with what they have practiced and fit the program around the players they have. Trust the system and build on what has been sucessful this year albeit not much

Yeah very good point.. but do what u got to do to win a game.. but the double wing should work if they have the right players in the correct spots.. but we will see..

I watched the game and I didn't see a dominating Montgomery defense. I saw one that was efficient play against the worst offensive outing I've seen from Newman in the last 4 years.
Jack james at Qb is not the solution to their offense. Quite frankly I don't think they have a solution, but every school that dominates at some point in time experiences off seasons. That's just the way it is.
In the last three years Newman has done something that I don't think you see that often and that is bring in quarterbacks that are playing their first year as a starter and having very successful seasons. I may be wrong about Lingle, not sure if he only started one year or not and I don't know if Kyle wright was the year before him, but if he was that's an even more impressive sucession of quarterbacks.
Montgomery won an ugly game plan and simple.

Stogi & Ben - You fit the CN mold to a "T".
Why would I actually think a CN supporter could give credit to the other team's Defense when they were shutout and held to 23 yards?LOL
Of coarse Montgomery had nothing to do with the shutout at all. What was I thinking?LOL
The only thing Montgomery's D could have done better is score points. Give the other team some credit.
No doubt CN's offense was bad, but no other team they have played has shut them out or held them to such few yards.

I believe that coaches should set up their offense around their players not try to mold player into something their not. that being said, usually you do that at the begining of a season unless you have injuries? To change now may not help out much but, I guess it can't really hurt either considering?
I will say it (probably never hear the end of it) but I am not really a Newman supporter but Stogi hit it on the head. Every team has an rebuilding phase and it is here for Newman too bad that no other NBL schools were able to totally take advantage of it..

4thqter that game was plain 'ol ugly. Look at all the penalties. That was some of the poorest playing I've seen. If you want to talk Monty defenses that dominated go back and look at their undefeated season. The defense that was on the field for Monty wasn't in that class at all nor did they play at that level.
Now as far as fitting the Cardinal Newman Mold that statement shows just how little you know about me. I grew up in Rincon Valley. My older brother and sisters all went to Montgomery. My older brother played football with Mel Gray there and as a kid I went to the games. I went Rancho Cotate. My younger brother and nephew both attended Cardinal Newman. I have watched my nephew play ball since he was 8 years old and continue to do so. Oh wait....maybe I do fit the mold. They must have recruited me as a fan.....leave it to Newman. Man they are sly.
I am not tied to any one team. I am a fan of football and appreciate a good game no matter who is playing. Monty's defense wasn't out there racking up sack after sack or making interceptions that were due to exceptional play instead of picking off lame ducks thrown out of pure desperation. They did the job that they needed to do much the same as a journeyman fighter does. Put that defense's performance on the field against Newman's offense from last year and the score is 42 -9 if not more.

And if you put Monty's championship team of 2003 out there against Newman of last year, they might win 42-9...this is simply a preposterous premise, about matching up year's past with a current year's teams...you can do that on Cal Preps, but only as an interesting exercise. Fact is, while the offensive performance by Montgomery was far less than exemplary, and riddled with penalties, the defense did dominate. Lame duck passes? Could it be that the pass rush had anything to do with that, or did Newman simply give up and lay it out there just for the heck of it? Don't think so. I don't know the final tally, but Montgomery probably had at least 6 sacks (Austin Shull alone was credited for 4), so does this not meet your criteria for "racking up sack after sack" - how many does it take to constitute this? 8? 10? Look, either Newman simply played a bad game (possible) or is not a good team (possible) or is a good team (possible) forced into a bad game by a very good defense (likely...no one was saying that Newman was a weak team prior to the game, but only not up to recent year's standards.)

All I'm saying hsfb is that on that night Newman's offense played about as well as Elsie Allen and you expect a defense to do good against them. I don't think there was this great offense that couldn't function because the defense was totally dominating.
Had Montgomery beat Newman last year 9 to zip I would have said "Whoah, that is one hell of a defense out there tonight."
You probably won't agree with that statement either, but that's ok. everyone has the right to their own opinion here.

My hats off to Newman tonight, they went away from their spread offense to go with the Russell Ponce wing T. Russell did a great job calling the plays from high above the field. The running backs ran very very hard. We had 4 turnovers in the first half which did not help the matters.
