According to a story in today's PD by Eric Branch, the North Coast Section Board approved expanding the playoffs for this year (at least?) from 12 to 16 teams. This of course means, among other things, no byes for the top teams and a virtual certainty that Rancho, Newman and Carillo will get in. Even if Carillo loses its' last two games, a distinct possibility as they are playing Montgomery and Newman, they would still have a better than .500 record in the division, which is one of the criteria for qualification. There are a couple of teams that could knock them out, but as per the Cal Preps ratings, and in particular the league/season /division records of those close to them at the bottom, it appears they would still get in, even if they end up with an overall record of 4-6.

Perhaps so, but for those of us (and I guess I can count myself) not in the know, it was news to me...and there has been recent talk on this board about how Newman, amongst others may just barely squeeze into the playoffs, and get maybe that LAST #12 slot, etc., so if this is "old news" and well known, it sure is curious how nobody ever mentioned this before...I'm just sayin'....

There will be a couple of 4-6 teams make it that were 4-3 in their leagues. I like it and you can bet there will be a significant upset in the first round with a 13-16 seed beating a 1-4 seed.

4 vs. 13? Maybe, but even that would surprise me, and I would be even more surprised at 3 vs. 14 upset, etc. Guess anything can happen in hs football, but it's a pretty wide gap between the top and bottom of the division.

Big gap in the NCAA Tourney every year also but there is always upsets. That is why we love sports.

I'm just not sure upsets are genearlly a good thing. Granted, the higher seeds need to beat whomever they play, but with added teams and added games, the chances for an upset increases. And I think the truly good teams need to be rewarded somehow for their regular season success. And from a fans perspective, I'd like to see the the best teams advancing in the playoffs more than I want to see an arguably undeserving playoff team that may have caught a team flat or had some breaks go their way. That's not to say if there are upsets, the lower seeded teams don't deserve a measure of credit, but creating a playoff field that allows a higher probability for an upset isn't best for the system. Especially when finances are the motivating factor.

As for upsets in other sports, like NCAA basketball, they are still pretty rare, at least from the very top vs. the very bottom, but again, anything is possible. But I do think, however, as to the top teams no longer getting byes, that if you were to poll the players, if they could choose between getting the bye, or the opportunity to play an additional game, they would opt for the game, and especially the seniors - for most of them their last hs football game played is their last football game played, so I think they'd rather play as many as possible. If this is accurate, then it's a win win...top teams get to play another game, and teams otherwise not even in the playoffs get to play another game.

To Ben...since it is "old news" about the expanded playoffs, then you might want to revise the "on the bubble" teams on the ncsnbl.com website to be teams rated below number 16, not those rated below number 12...for those of us not as knowledgable as you are on the particulars of the playoff structure, this is now kind of misleading, doncha think?
