The Windsor Varsity Football coach position should be opeing soon with Fayter resigning to go to Cloverdale. I have talked to several Windsor parents, coaches, and other coaches around Sonoma County and here are what I consider the top 5 candidates for the job. I will list the strength of each coach, the offense they would most likely run, and then the reason they might not apply. They are in order from who I think is the best candidate on down.
1. Lance Badger- Cardinal Newman head JV coach. Strength- experienced coach who has run the top JV program in the county for a few years now. He lives in Windsor and has coached in the Windsor youth football system. Offense- Spread. Might not apply because- Is sure successor to Cronin at Cardinal Newman in the NBL.
2. Dustin Davis- Windsor JV coach. Strength- 29-0-1 record past 3 years!!! Parents and kids really like him. Offense- unknown. He is a defensive coach so it depends on who he picks as his O.C. Reason might not apply- Appears he is going to police academy so may not have time.
3. Tony Keefer- SRHS head Varsity coach. Heard he is unhappy so may want to change. Strength- Has lead two programs and brings experience. Turned Tamalpais into a strong program and had SRHS competing with the big boys in the NBL. Offense- Pro and spread mix. Might not apply because- Already has his own program at SRHS in the NBL.
4. Matt Tomlin- Piner head Varsity coach. Is very committed and may want to coach at school where kids are as committed as him. Strength- Windsor fans have screamed they want to pass the ball and open up the offense. Tomlin's team passed 55 times against Montgomery in one game. Reason may not apply- Already has his own program at Piner in the NBL.
5. Russell Ponce- Cardinal Newman assistant coach. Is very committed which Windsor is looking for. Strength- Kids will run through a brick wall for this guy. Made Newman successful this year with his double wing attack. Offense: Double Wing. Reason may not apply-concern is he reportedly had problems with coaching administrative duties at SRHS with two teams and 60 players. Windsor has 3 teams and 120 players.
My opinion: Windsor could not go wrong in choosing any one of these five guys. I like all 5 coaches.

I dont believe anything is confirmed as of yet.
Few Corrections:
2. Dustin Davis - Great fit and would be ideal, but I've heard he won't even be coaching JV next season due to the Police Academy. If he's not going to continue JV, so I wouldn't think hes going to want the varsity job.
4. Matt Tomlin - Tomlin would be a good fit as well, his offense can pass and run. He enjoys the fly offense but knows how to call a passing offense. He will NOT apply though, he is much too committed at Piner, this coming from the horses mouth.
5. Russell Ponce - From what I know he has plans else where with other coaches, but I'm sure he is interested. I believe his work schedule might conflict with head coaching though.
Some names I would add to the list...
6. Jay Higgins - His position at Carrillo could be up after this season. Just a possibility though.
7. John Antonio - Currently coaching at Casa Grande. Has plenty of experience with head coaching.
8. Kevin Harrington - Currently at Rancho Cotate after a year at Casa Grande and some time at Petaluma. He was the runner-up at Casa and nearly took the San Marin job. I dont know if he would want to drive all the way to Windsor, but you never know.
I'm sure there would be many others... I could speculate about another 5 off the top of my head.

The best coach by far on that list is John Antonio. There are other coaches in the area that are interested. I can tell you that much.

It could play out that John Antonio gets the HC job, and hires Kevin Harrington as the OC or DC. I'm pretty sure that was the plan had Antonio or Harrington taken the job at San Marin. I had heard they wanted to coach together, but I'm not so sure Harrington would be willing to make that drive. From what I understand, he's a little nervous about losing his seniority with his teaching position, especially if he switches districts, and even more with cuts that are likely to happen again. I don't see him applying for the HC job. It's more likely he coaches there as the OC or DC. In addition, you can scratch Tomlin off the list. He is very confident that they really improved as a program. He and many of the parents think this thing will be able to compete in 2-3 years. From what I see happening, I agree. Good luck to all who apply. I also wish to congratulate Coach Fayter on his efforts and his future family.

He never coached at Windsor. Started at St. Vincent, then Calistoga, Richmond and now at Casa.

Jay Higgins??? Are you serious? Let's not start ANOTHER "witch-hunt". He's fine. Public school admin. doesn't put as much stock into wins/losses as the fanatic-fringe of HS parents/bloggers might suspect. Their (the admin.) primary job is running a school, and believe it or not, as long as the coach isn't abusive, and the coach is an on-campus teacher who the players like, he will be a "lifer" as a coach. Wins/loses aren't as big of a deal. They're main focus, is that they don't do anything that may end up in the paper. Jay Higgins is solid........he's not going anywhere.

Get over it Homer, its just a topic of discussion that has a legit chance of becoming reality.
If anyone comes out of Newman thats interested, I wouldnt think Piel, Badger, or even Alderson, I would lean more towards Ponce or Saiz. Both have been head coaches in the past and have both had success.
I think Higgins is on thin ice, but that just my own personal opinion, thats all. Viking2000 has a very good point on the overall scope of a school and its priorities. I would just say, Carrillo is up in the air.

If I was Windsor this list would only be two names long. 1. Lance Badger. Great coach knows offense and defense. Played at UC Davis and coached several years at Newman. 2. Matt Tomlin. Offensive expert in the spread option attack. Exciting style of football.
Good luck Coach Fayter on future choices.

Mustang,
Are you serious? How many different offenses did Piner run at the end of the year? Exciting only because you would never know if they would win or lose. He did what was best for the program, but again, he is NOT applying for the job. That is a slam dunk.
Ben,
If MC wasn't the type of school it is, I would understand your logic, but the bottom line is this, Higgins hasn't done a bad job. Parents may think he "underachieved", but what is that really based on? I would be fine having my kid play there. He prepares his kids, he runs a consistent offense that allows his kids to be successful, and he teaches there. Keep in mind, (EVERYBODY READING), it isn't the school's job to have a USC type program. Admin. is more concerned with test scores. That's the reality. He's doing fine. He's solid.

Your correct, his offense is consistent, but it consistently under achieves. The Delaware Wing-T works only if you can pass out of it. Thats how Carrillo beat and got to the NCS Championship in 2005. Higgins allowed Froman to throw the ball. In looking at the Casa Grande game, Carrillo got back in the mix, and dominated Casa's defense by passing all over their secondary. Carrillo could have won that game, and it was no thanks to a consistently inconsistent run based offense.
1. Badger, from what I've heard he has little to no interest in the job. 2. Tomlin told me specifically hes going no where. Hes there to make Piner a solid program.
Knolton? Ervin? Meredith? Price? Keefer? I could go on :-)

How would you like to be the administrator who takes a chance on Meredith. Risking your career on that hire will never happen. Knowlton is not head coaching material at all. Ervin-maybe........Keefer-already posted that.... Price-know nothing of him
